  • NO, absolutely not! Whether you have a newborn, baby or toddler, when working with me, you will never have to use “cry it out”, I promise! Somewhere along the line, sleep training somehow became synonymous with “crying it out”. Although that is one method (that I do not use), there are other options to get your baby to sleep.

Although some parents may be at their wits end and be willing to try ANYTHING, there are many other sleep training techniques that can be used in place of letting your child cry for hours on end.

Although these other sleep methods are most often categorized as gentle, intermediate and firm, I don’t like to think of them like that! I think it’s better to look at the methods on a scale of less gradual to more gradual. Some methods that are less gradual take less time and require not as much parent support/interaction. Methods that are more gradual take more time and require more parent support/interaction.

  • When it comes to pediatric sleep training techniques, there are many different methods that can be used to help your child sleep.

When working with newborns, it’s all about laying a solid sleep foundation! This is MY JAM and what I truly believe is SO beneficial to getting your baby to be an awesome little sleeper from the start! It’s really why I started my business! It’s never developmentally appropriate to sleep train a newborn. However, there are many things that you can do to help set them up for successful sleep and that’s exactly what I teach!

When working with babies, toddlers and preschoolers (4 months-6 years), there are many different sleep training techniques you can use. Although these sleep methods are most often categorized as gentle, intermediate and firm, I don’t like to think of them like that! I think it’s better to look at these methods on a scale of less gradual to more gradual. Some methods that are less gradual take less time and require less parent support/interaction. Methods that are more gradual take more time and require more parent support/interaction.

The specific type of sleep training method that is used will be determined by the Sleep Intake Assessment Form that you submit. The more detailed and accurate you are when submitting this form, the better I’ll be able to help your child. Tell me everything!

  • This is probably one of the most asked questions that I get! I’m always very up front and honest with clients about what to expect during the sleep training process. Yes, your child will most likely have tears, no matter what method you use. However, that doesn’t mean they will be screaming for hours on end!

The reason that there will most likely be tears during this process is because when you sleep train, you are taking away a sleep prop. This is something that your child has probably been dependent on for months (or their whole life). Changing this is almost always going to result in some anger/tears because their normal way of falling asleep is being altered. Think about it: if someone took away your favorite blanket or pillow, you would probably be mad about it? That’s how your baby feels.

If you are a parent to a newborn, you will almost certainly hear cries and see tears because that’s your baby’s only way of communicating. However, you will always be by their side to comfort them and never leave them crying for long periods of time!

As a parent, hearing your baby cry can be heartbreaking (trust me, I get it)! In every technique, you will be checking in on your baby, so you are not abandoning them at all. You are sleep training because you love and care about them and want them to sleep better!

  • For the Sleep Training Package, the private 1-on-1 consultation is done virtually using Google Meets. The purpose of the consultation is to teach you the why behind pediatric sleep and teach you strategies that will help you implement your sleep plan successfully. The layout of the consultation is…

    - Get to know a little bit about me

    - Check-in with you

    - Learn about and discuss the “why” behind pediatric sleep

    - Deep dive into your individualized sleep plan

    - Wrap up & answer any questions

With the Invigorated Parents Package (for expecting and newborn parents), I meet privately with you for 8 sessions. Each session includes a check-in, and specific information to go over for that day, as well as a discussion on your child’s current sleep.

  • The discovery call is free to book! During the discovery call, you chat with me about your family’s current sleep troubles, learn more about the packages that I offer, discuss next steps and answer any questions that you may have.

  • The good thing is, there is no age limit when it comes to laying a good sleep foundation for your baby! That is the focus of the Invigorated Parents Package (0-3 months), laying a solid sleep foundation. With newborns, they aren’t at an age where it’s appropriate to sleep train, so the focus of sleep is different for them.

Once your child is 5 months, that is the developmental age where more formal sleep training techniques can be used to help them sleep.

  • For babies 5 months+, the pediatric sleep training process can take anywhere from one night to a few weeks. The length of time that the sleep training process takes will take depends mostly on the type of sleep training method that you use (see FAQ #4). When you fill out your Sleep Intake Assessment Form, that is how I determine what method will work best for your family.

For newborns (0-3 months) and 4 month old babies, the process and timeline is much different. Working with newborns, it takes longer to see real change in how a baby sleeps. The length of this varies with each baby. This is due to the fact that newborns are so little and developmentally need to wake during the night, especially during those first few weeks of life, so there is nothing that can be done to get them to sleep through the night right off the bat. It’s a gradual approach!

  • This answer is really going to be up to you! If your child is waking up multiple times a night or will only go to sleep being rocked or fed, there’s actually nothing wrong with that. If you don’t mind the frequent night wakings and what you’re doing is working for your family, then there’s no need to change anything.

However, most parents at some point do get tired of waking up in the middle of the night and want their child to develop good sleep habits and be able to fall asleep independently. If you want your child to have better sleep habits and sleep through the night, then pediatric sleep training is a great idea! If you’re thinking about it, most likely, that means that you’re ready to do it. Sleep really is so beneficial for not just children, but for adults too.

  • Countless times I’ve heard parents say, “my first child was an angel sleeper, napped and went to bed perfectly and my second one was a nightmare” (or something along those lines!) This relates to nature vs. nurture. There are inherent genetic and biological factors that contribute to your baby’s development (nature) and then there are life experiences, people and the effect of their environment that also contribute to your baby’s development (nurture). Nurture is related to kids’ sleep habits too.

So yes, some children are born better sleepers than others. However, if your baby is not a great sleeper, that doesn’t mean they will be like that forever. There are so many things that you can do to help your child sleep better. That’s what Cuddlebug is here for!

For a relatable comparison to this question, think about students and math (yep, that’s the teacher coming out in me!) Think of it like this: some students are naturally gifted at math and are just good at it without even trying. However, some students can still be really good at math, but they have to work at it a little bit harder, study and practice their skills to become successful. It works the same way with sleep. If your baby is a good sleeper, good for you, you’re one of the lucky ones! If your baby/child struggles with sleep, that doesn’t mean they are going to be a horrible sleeper forever. They just may need a little more practice and support to help them become a good sleeper.

  • Very good question! A lot of clients I work with have come to me saying I’ve tried lots of techniques and NOTHING works for my child.

My response is always to explain that sleep is like a puzzle and there are lots of different pieces. One of those pieces is using a sleep training method, but if something else is off, the method may not necessarily work.

Working with a sleep consultant has its perks for many reasons. You get full support and guidance from a sleep expert. I am there to answer all of your questions. Most importantly, I support you throughout this whole process, from start to finish, to help your family reach their sleep goals. Sleep training is hard, no matter what method you choose. Having a sleep expert there to hold you accountable, support you, cheer you on can and will be a game changer!
